SLE Recruitment: Apply by 20th April 2018


We have opened a new Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs) recruitment round to help with our Teaching School Partnership's school to school support work.

We are particularly looking for English, Maths and Science SLEs but will also be interested to see applications in the other areas outlined in the application form which you can find on the School to School Support tab. Additional background:

As a Teaching School Partnership of schools, we are asked to coordinate and provide high quality support to other schools to help with school improvement. Our Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs) play an important part in this work, as they are in a privileged position to lead effective school to school improvement. SLEs are outstanding middle and senior leaders with specialisms in a particular field who have the skills to work with individuals or teams in similar positions in other schools. By demonstrating excellence in their field, these system leaders can influence others and affect change to ensure the best outcomes for all pupils.

The benefits being an SLE is that the work is a highly regarded form or professional and leadership learning and development, enriching current leadership skills and knowledge by outward facing work in other school contexts. It is also an important role in raising the standards in education and on reflection can bring benefits back to your own practice.

Ideally, each year SLEs would be working for 5 – 10 days in other schools and should be actively looking to establish their own connections and deployments.

Our MFL SLE, Sophie Jobson says about the role:

"My SLE role has embraced the whole spectrum of school-to-school support, from the intensive to the light touch. It can be anything from an email suggesting a useful resource to observing a lesson and developing good practice. An initial meeting identifies the school's needs, followed by a plan setting out what will be involved to make improvements.

Being an SLE is an outward-facing role, looking at how your skills can be used to help others and spreading knowledge, structure and best practice. My SLE work has been incredibly rewarding and given me a positive reflection on my own teaching as I have gained as many new ideas as I have given and I have learnt as much as I have shared. I love spreading teaching and learning of MFL."

ChemNet Conference – A-Level Students


Earlier this week Wellington College (in conjunction with the WCTSP, ISSP and the RSC), hosted a CHEMNET Conference for A-Level Chemistry Students, with great success.

The programme consisted of speakers from The University of Reading, Reading Scientific Services, Glaxo Smith Klein and AWE, as well as an educational representative from the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Over the course of the afternoon the students were presented with the roles of four very different chemists, the potential career routes into these jobs as well as the many opportunities that are also available within these sectors.

As a result of hearing first hand from our speakers as to how they progressed along their career paths the students were able to develop a greater understanding of the routes available to them, this also increased their awareness of the vast and exciting opportunities available.

We would like to thank our speakers for helping to make our first ChemNet event such a success. In addition we would also like to thank the schools who attended and engaged with the programme.

United Learning - Easter Leadership Programme 2016


Last week Wellington College was thrilled to host a Leadership programme for 19 Year 5 students.

In collaboration with United Learning the Wellington Leadership Institute tailored the 2 day residential course to work with the 9 and 10 year olds on understanding the role of a leader and developing their leadership skills.

For most of the students this was their first overnight away from home and had the potential to be a little daunting. However due to the nature of the 2 days they were kept busy and entertained with various activities such as Capture the Flag, a low ropes course and a number of workshops designed to help them understand what it takes to be an outstanding leader.

The sessions were mostly run by Wellington Students who are members of the Wellington Leadership Institute and on their own leadership learning journey themselves. A new challenge for them, they were exceptionally professional and organised and made a positive impression on our visitors.

The feedback from the 2 days has been extremely positive, and we are delighted to hear how the students gained a greater understanding of the traits needed to be a great leader in such a short space of time.

We would like to thank United Learning, the Wellington Leadership Institute and Students and the Year 5 Pupils and Teachers for a thoroughly successful event.

St Michael's College visit


Last Friday we welcomed 20 exceptional pupils from St Michael's College, London to spend a day at Wellington College in various different classes. Throughout the day they were engaged in practical sessions in Biology and Chemistry as well as attending sessions in Maths and Physics.

The feedback from the pupils and accompanying teachers was very positive and they all seemed to thoroughly enjoy getting a taste of Wellington life. They threw themselves into the tasks presented to them, including a class on ECG (Electrocardiogram) and understanding the Synthesis of Asprin, amongst others.

Applications welcome for two new SLE positions in Maths and Science


The WCTSP is looking two recruit two SLEs, one in the Sciences and one in Mathematics. The application window will be open from 1 – 23 October.  Applications will be via a link from the DfE, which will be shared from this site once it is live. For more information about eligibility and the application process please follow this link:

Should eligible applications be received, there will be an assessment day at Wellington on 27 November. Applicants will be made aware of the outcome shortly after 5 December.
