Event Type: Twilight
Venue: Sandhurst School
Owlsmoor Road
GU47 0SD

Event Cost: FREE
Event Subject or Topic Area: Mathematics
Target Audience: Maths teachers, trainee/aspiring maths teachers
Event Description:

TeachMeets are a great way for local educationalists to meet, discuss ideas and share best practice. They aim to engage and inspire fellow colleagues. Anyone can share great ideas they've trialed in their classrooms, a teaching resource they love, a great website, a classroom activity - whatever you like!

With a lot of schools changing to a mastery approach in KS2 a lot of our intake will have been exposed to the bar model. What is the role of the bar model in our classroom? When can we use it? Does it have limitations?

As a group we will discuss how we can use representations to change challenging questions into an accessible question. We will discuss how the bar model can act as a way in for those more higher end topics, simultaneous equations for example, that are now on the foundation paper.

Event Outcomes:

  • To provide a networking opportunity between local maths teachers
  • A chance to practice using the bar model and applying it to problems. Attendees will get to share their experience, if any, of using the bar model and what they have had to change in their ways of thinking
  • An opportunity to find out where to use bar modelling in your classroom.
